A sump pump that keeps running is usually doing one of three things: pumping a lot of incoming water, held on by a stuck float switch, or cycling because a failed check valve lets water fall back into the pit. If it runs nonstop in dry weather, suspect the float or the valve. Our sump pump installation and repair in Moncton covers fixes and replacements, from $300.
Check the weather first
After heavy rain or during spring melt, a pump that runs often is doing its job. The Moncton A normals show about 892 mm of rain and 310 cm of snow a year (Canadian Climate Normals, Moncton A), so long runs in spring are normal. If it keeps running days after the water stops, look further.
Check the float switch
Look into the pit with the lid off and the power on, taking care not to touch the pump. If the float is jammed against the side of the pit or caught on the cord, the pump may never get the signal to stop. Moving a float clear is safe. Wiring and electrical work are not.
Check the check valve
A check valve on the discharge pipe stops pumped water from draining back into the pit. If it fails, the water returns, the pump restarts and the cycle repeats every few minutes. A thump or gurgle when the pump stops is a common sign.
Check the discharge
In winter, a discharge outlet that is frozen shut or buried under snow sends water back into the pit. Clear the outlet and see whether the cycling stops. If water pools where the discharge exits, tell us when you call.
When to call
Call if the pump runs nonstop in dry weather, if it cycles every minute or two, if it makes grinding noises or if the pit fills and the pump does not start. A pump that has been failing for years usually costs more to repair than to replace, and we will say so. Basement water is urgent, and we are open 24/7.
