Inside of a toilet tank showing the overflow tube, chain and flapper

A toilet that keeps running is almost always a worn flapper, a chain that is too tight or too loose, or a fill valve that does not shut off. Lift the tank lid and check those three, in that order. If a new part does not stop it, our toilet repair in Moncton starts from $300.

Check the flapper

The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. If it is warped, cracked or covered with a slimy film, it will not seal, and water leaks into the bowl. Add a few drops of food colouring to the tank without flushing. If colour shows in the bowl after ten minutes, the flapper is leaking.

Check the chain

If the chain is too short, it holds the flapper open a little. If it is too long, it can get caught under the flapper. There should be a small amount of slack when the flapper is closed.

Check the fill valve and water level

If water runs into the overflow tube at the top of the tank, the water level is too high or the fill valve is not shutting off. Adjust the float so the water stops about an inch below the top of the tube. If the fill valve hisses or keeps filling, it needs replacing.

Know where the shut-off is

The shut-off valve is behind the toilet near the floor. Turn it clockwise to stop the water while you work, or in an emergency.

When to call

Call if a new flapper and fill valve do not stop the running, if the toilet leaks at the base, if the bowl rocks or if water is spreading on the floor. We find the cause first and tell you your options before any work starts. We are open 24/7.
