Inside a garage, a copper pipe running down the wall beside an exterior door with a frosted window, above frosty concrete

Pipes burst at night, on weekends and in the worst cold of the year, and Dieppe's winters make that more than a possibility. Call and we answer, take the details and book your appointment. Call +1 (506) 306-2963.

Dieppe cold in numbers

Environment Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for Moncton A, the Greater Moncton record, give a January daily average of -8.4 C, a July average of 19.3 C and a yearly average of 5.7 C (Canadian Climate Normals, Moncton A). The same normals count about 170 days a year with a minimum temperature at or below 0 C, and about 139 days a year below -2 C (same normals).

The Moncton Parish soil survey puts the frost-free period at roughly 114 to 124 days, and says nearness to the coast lengthens it (Agriculture Canada soil survey). Put together, that is a long season in which an unheated garage, a crawl space or a pipe on a north wall can freeze.

A burst pipe at night: the first ten minutes

Close the main shut-off, then open the lowest cold tap in the house to let the pipes drain. If the water heater is electric and losing water, switch off its breaker. Take photos of the damage before you move things, because your insurer will ask.

Then call. Tell us where the water is coming from, how fast it is moving and whether it is near the electrical panel. A plumber who knows this arrives with the right parts, and you hear the price before any work starts.

Frozen pipes: where it happens and what to avoid

A frozen pipe often shows itself as a faucet that gives a trickle or nothing at all. Leave the tap open, keep heat on in the room, and do not use a torch or open flame. A pipe that has split can look fine until it thaws, and then the water comes back through the crack.

Because we do burst and frozen pipe work ourselves, one visit can find the freeze, check for a split and repair or replace the damaged section. We also do sewer line repair and leaks, so a freeze that has hurt more than one thing is not a second call.

What By-law 78-5 says about frost and stoppages

Section 7 says water mains and water service pipes shall be placed deep enough, or otherwise secured, to be protected from frost under ordinary conditions to the satisfaction of the director of public works (Dieppe by-law 78-5). Section 18 says no person is entitled to damages or a refund for a water supply stoppage caused by accident or frost (same by-law).

The by-law speaks to mains and service pipes. When the freeze is inside your home, on the pipes you own, the job is a plumber's. Our emergency plumber page has the general advice, and the plumber in Dieppe page covers the rest of our work in town.

After hours in Dieppe

Whether you are in Saint-Anselme, Leger's Corner or out near Champlain Place (Wikipedia, Dieppe), say the street and nearest cross street when you call. If your house is in Riverview instead, the same 24/7 number serves our Riverview emergency page.

After the repair: stopping a repeat

After a repair, it helps to know what exposed the pipe, such as a cold outside wall, an open crawl space or a vent. We tell you what we find. Sometimes the answer is a section of pipe moved or replaced, and sometimes it is as simple as opening cabinet doors in a cold snap.

Know where your main shut-off is and make sure every adult in the house can reach it in the dark.

Questions we get asked

My water stopped in a cold snap. Is the City of Dieppe responsible?

Not under By-law 78-5, s. 18, which says no person is entitled to damages or a refund for a water supply stoppage caused by accident or frost. If the freeze is inside your house, call us.

How many freezing days does Dieppe get in a year?

Environment Canada's Moncton A normals count about 170 days a year with a minimum temperature at or below 0 C, and about 139 days a year below -2 C.

Can you come at 3 a.m. in January?

Yes. We are open 24/7. Call, and we answer, take the details and book your appointment.

Is it safe to thaw a frozen pipe myself?

Never with a flame. Open the tap, keep heat on in the room and call us. If the pipe has split, thawing it starts a leak.

Do you give a price before you start on an emergency call?

Yes. You hear your options and the price before any work starts, even in the middle of the night.

Open 24/7. We answer, then book your appointment.
