New Brunswick's plumbing regulation limits an owner-occupant to one special homeowner's plumbing permit in a three-year period. If the toilet is more than a flapper, call a plumber. Call +1 (506) 306-2963.

What the homeowner permit allows, and how often

NB Reg. 84-187, s. 15(2) lets the chief plumbing inspector grant a special homeowner's plumbing permit, and s. 15(2.1) limits an owner-occupant to one such permit in a three-year period (NB Reg. 84-187). If you use your permit on a toilet, you may not have it for a bigger job in the next three years.

The regulation also says the plumbing contractor or person responsible shall obtain a plumbing permit before starting installation, extension, alteration, renewal or repair of a plumbing system (same regulation). Ask us how both apply to your toilet before you decide to do it yourself.

Toilets in rentals, condos and townhouses

Of the 281 new housing units Riverview permitted in the first half of 2024, 206 were multi-unit (source listed at the foot of this page). In a rental the toilet is usually the owner's to fix, in a condo it depends on the bylaws, and in a townhouse it depends on how the building is set up.

If you are the tenant, tell the owner first and call us with the details so the appointment suits both of you. If you are the owner, we explain what the cause is and what it will cost before work starts.

Repair, reseat or replace

A constantly running toilet is usually a flapper or fill valve. A weak flush may be a tank that is not filling to the line or a partly blocked bowl. A leak at the base calls for a new seal, and a rocking bowl may mean the floor connection needs work.

A cracked bowl or tank, or a toilet that has failed after earlier repairs, is a replacement. When you are choosing, we compare one-piece and two-piece models and bowl heights with the bathroom in front of us.

Cost and what to say when you call

Toilet repair and installation start from $300. The price follows whether it is a parts repair, a reset or a new toilet, and what the floor under it looks like. You get the price before work starts.

Tell us the street and nearest cross street, or a landmark such as Caseley Park at Riverview Town Hall (Wikipedia, Riverview), and say whether it is running, leaking, rocking or clogging. Our toilet repair service page compares the choices, and the plumber in Riverview page lists the rest of what we do here. Over the river, see toilet repair in Dieppe.

What happens on a Riverview toilet call

The plumber checks the shut-off valve first, then the tank parts, the bowl and the seal at the base. A rocking toilet gets a look at the floor connection before anything is lifted, because a soft floor changes the scope.

When the work is done, the toilet is flushed several times and the base and supply line are checked for drips. If we find something beyond the toilet, such as a slow drain behind it, we tell you.

Small habits that protect a toilet

Replace a worn flapper early, since a running toilet wastes water and is the first sign of a part wearing out. Skip in-tank cleaning tablets, which can wear rubber parts. Report a wobble the first time you notice it.

If you have a second bathroom that is used less, flush it now and then so the seal and the trap stay in good order.

Questions we get asked

How many homeowner plumbing permits can I get in Riverview?

NB Reg. 84-187, s. 15(2.1) limits an owner-occupant to one special homeowner's plumbing permit in a three-year period. The permit is granted by the chief plumbing inspector under s. 15(2).

I rent in a Riverview townhouse. Can I call you to fix my toilet?

Tell your landlord first, since in a rental the toilet is usually the owner's to fix. If they agree, call us and we will book a time that suits you both.

Does replacing a toilet need a plumbing permit?

NB Reg. 84-187, s. 13(1) says the plumbing contractor or person responsible shall obtain a plumbing permit before starting installation, extension, alteration, renewal or repair of a plumbing system. Call us and we will go through how it applies to your job.

My toilet rocks when I sit on it. Is that urgent?

Not an emergency, but do not wait. A rocking bowl can break its seal and leak into the floor. Call and we will look before it does.

Should I fix a running toilet myself or call you?

A worn flapper or fill valve is a small repair many owners handle. If a new part does not stop it, or you would rather not touch the plumbing, call us.
