To unclog a drain, start with a plunger for a sink, tub or toilet, or a hand auger for hair and soap in a tub or shower. If the water still will not drain after a few tries, or several fixtures are slow at once, the blockage is deeper in the line and needs a plumber. Our drain cleaning in Moncton starts from $150.
Sinks
Remove the stopper, clear any hair or debris you can see, and plunge with the overflow covered by a wet cloth. In a double kitchen sink, plug the other drain first. Hot tap water helps with a greasy clog. Do not pour boiling water onto plastic pipes.
Tubs and showers
Most tub clogs are hair caught just below the drain. Lift the stopper or strainer, pull out what you can, then use a plastic drain tool or a hand auger. A hair catcher afterwards stops it returning.
Toilets
Use a flange plunger, not a cup plunger, and push and pull steadily. Do not flush again if the bowl is rising. If a toilet and the nearby tub or floor drain are slow together, the clog is further down the line.
What not to do
Skip store-bought chemical cleaners if you may need a plumber after, since the liquid can sit in the trap and splash back. Do not push a rigid wire hard into a pipe you cannot see.
When to call
Call if more than one fixture is slow, if the lowest floor drain backs up, if sewage smells come up from a drain, or if the same drain keeps clogging. Those point to the main line. We find the cause first and tell you your options before any work starts. We are open 24/7 if it is an emergency.
