What drain cleaning includes

Most calls are one of two things: a single fixture that drains slowly, or a whole-house backup that points at the main line. We work out which one you have before touching anything, because the fix is different.

  • Kitchen, bathroom and laundry sinks, tubs and showers
  • Toilet and floor drain blockages
  • Main line clearing from the house out to the street connection
  • A check that water runs freely before we leave
  • A plain explanation of what caused the clog

Options compared plainly

There are four ways people deal with a clog. Here is how they compare.

  • Plunger or hand auger: fine for a hair clog in one sink or tub. It stops working once the blockage is past the trap or out in the main line.
  • Store-bought drain chemicals: the liquid can sit in the trap and splash back when someone opens it. We would rather you skip them.
  • Cable machine cleaning by a plumber: the usual answer for a blockage deeper in the line. It clears the pipe so water flows again.
  • Clearing plus repair: when roots, a sagging pipe or a broken joint keeps causing the blockage, the lasting fix is repairing that section. We also do sewer line repair.

What drives the cost

Drain cleaning starts from $150. Where your job lands depends on a few things you can usually tell us on the phone.

  • Which drain it is: a sink is quicker than a main line
  • How far in the blockage sits and how many bends the cable has to pass
  • Access: a cleanout near the floor drain is easier than pulling a toilet
  • Whether this is a one-off or the third time this year
  • Whether the pipe needs repair once it is clear

Local conditions across Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview

Each municipality writes its own sewer rules, and they matter when a line backs up. Dieppe says New Brunswick's Local Governance Act means municipalities cannot be held liable for sewer backup damage in homes, and that the City denies those claims (City of Dieppe, sewer backups). The same page recommends a certified plumber install and maintain a check valve, and advises keeping grease out of drains, using sink strainers and having pipes checked for tree roots or damage (same City page).

Riverview's By-law 400-25-02, s. 35.3 says the owner of any new building shall install and maintain a CSA approved backwater valve in the lateral sewer (Riverview water and sewer by-law). Our pages for drain cleaning in Dieppe and drain cleaning in Riverview go through the by-law sections. In Moncton the right answer depends on your address, so call and we will talk it through.

Warranty and what to expect

You call, we answer and the appointment is booked. A licensed, insured plumber arrives, checks the drain and tells you what was found. The price is agreed before any work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.

New parts such as a cleanout fitting carry the maker's warranty. Ask when you book and we will tell you what applies to your job. If a clog returns, we look at why it came back instead of just running the cable again.

Care afterwards

Most clogs are built by habit. These habits stop the next one. Our guide on how to unclog a drain covers what to try before you call.

  • Let cooking grease cool and put it in the trash, not the sink
  • Use a strainer in the kitchen sink and a hair catcher in the shower
  • Keep wipes, paper towels and cotton swabs out of the toilet
  • If several fixtures slow down at once and mature trees grow near the sewer line, have the pipe checked for roots

Questions we get asked

How much does drain cleaning cost in Moncton?

Drain cleaning starts from $150. The final price depends on which drain is blocked, how deep the blockage sits and how easy it is to reach. You get the price before work starts.

Can I get a plumber for a blocked drain at night or on a weekend?

Yes. We are open 24/7. If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, call right away and stop using water in the house.

Why does the same drain keep clogging?

A repeat clog usually means the cause was never fixed. It can be grease coating the pipe wall, roots in the line or a sagging section that holds water. We find the cause first, so we can tell you whether cleaning will hold or the pipe needs repair.

Who pays when the blockage is in the city sewer, not my pipe?

It depends on where the blockage is. Dieppe's By-law 78-5, s. 44(2) says that if an owner hired a plumber and the blockage was proved not owner-caused and on municipal property, the municipality may, subject to council approval, reimburse the invoiced costs, not including damages (Dieppe by-law 78-5). Riverview's By-law 400-25-02, s. 34.2 lets the Director authorize reimbursement of all or part of the invoice, not including damages, or refer it to Council (Riverview by-law 400-25-02). Keep your invoice.

Will cleaning damage an old pipe?

Cable cleaning is routine work. Old, cracked or root-filled pipe is the real risk, and it is better to know about it. If we find damaged pipe we stop, explain the problem and give you the price for repair before doing more.

Do you clear main lines and floor drains, or only sinks?

Both. We clear sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, laundry drains, floor drains and the main line out of the house. If the line needs sewer line repair, we do that too.
