A slow kitchen sink in Lakeburn and a floor drain backing up in Fox Creek start the same way: we work out whether the blockage is in your pipe or out at the City's connection. Dieppe's by-law makes that question matter. Call +1 (506) 306-2963.
Whose pipe is it? Dieppe's rules on blocked branch sewers
By-law 78-5, s. 44(1) says the property owner may be billed when the municipality is called to clear or repair a branch sewer to the property (Dieppe by-law 78-5). Section 44(2) offers a way back. If an owner hired a plumber to clear a branch sewer and the blockage was proved not owner-caused and on municipal property, the municipality may, subject to council approval, reimburse the invoiced costs, not including damages (same by-law).
That is why a clear written finding matters. When we clear a line, we tell you where the blockage sat and what caused it, so you have something to show the City if it turns out to be on municipal property. We do not promise a refund. The by-law says may, and it needs council approval.
Backups, check valves and who covers the damage
The City's sewer backup page says New Brunswick's Local Governance Act means municipalities cannot be held liable for sewer backup damage in homes, and that the City denies such claims (City of Dieppe, sewer backups). That puts the weight on the house side of the connection.
The same page recommends that a certified plumber install and maintain a check valve, and advises keeping grease out of drains, using sink strainers and having pipes checked for tree roots or damage (same City page). If you are not sure whether your house has a check valve or whether the one you have still works, call and ask whether it makes sense for your setup.
What we clear in Dieppe homes
Our drain work is residential: kitchen, bathroom and laundry lines, floor drains in basements, and the main line out of the house. Mostly residential Lakeburn sits directly south of the airport (Wikipedia, Dieppe), while the Dieppe Boulevard sector in the northeast mixes commercial and residential buildings (same source). On a mixed street we confirm the building is a home before we book.
Whether the call comes from near Champlain Place (Wikipedia, Dieppe) or from out in Painsec North, the first visit is the same. The plumber checks which drain is blocked, how far in the blockage sits and whether it is one fixture or the whole house.
Roots are on the City's own checklist, so if several drains slow at once, say so on the phone. It points to the main line and changes what we bring.
Floor drains and laundry standpipes in basements get less attention than sinks, and they are where a backup shows first. If you have not seen water in yours for years, pour a jug of water down it now and watch that it drains.
What it costs in Dieppe
Drain cleaning starts from $150. The price follows which drain it is, how deep the blockage sits and how easy the cleanout is to reach. You get the price before work starts.
If the blockage turns out to be on the municipal side, we tell you and stop. What you do next is a conversation with the City under s. 44, not a bigger bill from us. Our drain cleaning service page explains the rest of the job, and the plumber in Dieppe page lists everything else we do here. Over the river, the same service is on our Riverview drain cleaning page.

Questions we get asked
Dieppe cleared my blocked sewer and billed me. Is that allowed?
By-law 78-5, s. 44(1) says the property owner may be billed when the municipality is called to clear or repair a branch sewer to the property. That is what the by-law says. If you think the blockage was on municipal property, ask us to find where it sat.
Can I get my plumber's invoice reimbursed by the City of Dieppe?
Possibly. Section 44(2) says that where an owner hired a plumber and the blockage was proved not owner-caused and on municipal property, the municipality may, subject to council approval, reimburse the invoiced costs, not including damages. Keep the invoice.
Will Dieppe pay if my basement floods from a sewer backup?
The City says it will not. Its sewer backup page states that the Local Governance Act means municipalities cannot be held liable for sewer backup damage in homes, and that it denies such claims.
Does Dieppe require a check valve?
The City recommends that a certified plumber install and maintain one. We read that as a recommendation, and we do not tell you it is a legal requirement.
Do tree roots get into sewer lines in Dieppe?
Dieppe advises residents to have pipes checked for tree roots or damage. If several drains slow at once, it is worth having the line looked at.
