A tank in Dieppe is filled with the same treated Turtle Creek water as every other house in Greater Moncton, and the province, not the City, sets the permit rules for replacing it. Call +1 (506) 306-2963.
The water that fills your tank
The City of Moncton treats Turtle Creek surface water for Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview. Treatment takes out suspended solids, colour, bacteria, organics, iron and manganese, and the water is adjusted chemically to reduce corrosiveness to metal pipes (City of Moncton, Water Quality and Services).
Since January 30, 1998 the supply has also run a corrosion control program that adds a phosphate blend, called F-35, which forms a thin protective coating inside pipes (same City page). That protects the pipes. It does not tell you the age of the tank in your Dieppe basement, so a plumber still has to look at the tank.
Permits for a tank swap
NB Reg. 84-187, s. 13(1) says the plumbing contractor or person responsible shall obtain a plumbing permit from the chief plumbing inspector before starting installation, extension, alteration, renewal or repair of a plumbing system (NB Reg. 84-187). Whether a particular repair or replacement falls under it is a conversation to have when you call.
The regulation also makes room for volume. Section 14.01(1) and (2)(c) allow one special permit for a series of ten or more plumbing systems, and list replacing service water heaters among the work it can cover (same regulation). That is a provision for a series of ten or more systems, not for a single house.
Repair or replace in a Dieppe house
Most no-hot-water calls come down to a failed part or a failed tank. A tripped breaker, a bad element or a thermostat is a repair, from $150. A tank that is leaking from the body cannot be repaired, and replacement starts from $1,000.
The Dieppe Boulevard sector is listed as a fast-growing commercial and residential area (Wikipedia, Dieppe), and Lakeburn as a mostly residential neighbourhood directly south of the airport (same source). Our work is residential, so on a mixed street we confirm the tank belongs to a home.
The access to your tank changes the job more than the town does. A tank in a finished basement, at the bottom of a narrow staircase or behind a door that does not open fully takes more time than one in an open utility room. Tell us which you have.
What to have ready when you call
Give us a cross street or a landmark, such as the Dieppe Arts and Culture Centre (City of Dieppe, Centre des arts et de la culture), then tell us what the tank is doing. No hot water at all, lukewarm water, drips at the base or noises from the tank each point to a different cause.
Our hot water tank service page compares the options in more detail, and the plumber in Dieppe page lists everything else we do in town. If you have family or a rental across the river, we also cover hot water tank replacement in Riverview.
What a replacement day involves
The plumber shuts off the water to the tank and the power or fuel to it, then drains the tank before anything is disconnected. The new tank is connected, filled and checked for leaks, and only then is the power switched back on. An electric element switched on before the tank is full can burn out, so the order matters.
If the tank is in a basement, the stairs decide how long the carry takes, and a tight turn can mean the tank has to be tipped. Tell us about the stairs and any doors on the way when you call.

Questions we get asked
Does Dieppe's water need a special kind of water heater?
Nothing in the City of Moncton's description of its treatment points to a special tank. It treats the water to reduce corrosiveness to metal pipes. We choose a tank by size and your household, and judge an existing tank by its own condition.
Do I need a permit to replace one hot water tank in Dieppe?
NB Reg. 84-187, s. 13(1) says the plumbing contractor or person responsible shall obtain a plumbing permit before starting installation, extension, alteration, renewal or repair of a plumbing system. Call and we will talk through how it applies to your job.
Does one permit cover several water heaters?
Section 14.01(1) and (2)(c) allow one special permit for a series of ten or more plumbing systems and list replacing service water heaters among the work it can cover. A single home is not a series of ten.
I have no hot water. What should I check before calling?
Check the breaker first, then see whether the tank is leaking at the base. If it still will not heat, call. Our guide on what to check first walks through it.
My tank is in an unheated garage. Does the cold matter?
It does. The Moncton A normals count about 170 days a year with a minimum temperature at or below 0 C (Canadian Climate Normals, Moncton A). Water lines to a tank in an unheated space are exposed to that. Tell us where your tank sits and we will look at the lines when we are there.
