What replacement and repair includes

One page covers both because the first question is always the same: repair or replace? If you have no hot water right now, our guide on what to check first may save you a call.

  • Hot water tank replacement and installation
  • Water heater repair when you have no hot water, not enough of it, or lukewarm water
  • Leaks at the tank, fittings and connections
  • Reconnecting the water lines and checking for leaks before we leave
  • A plain explanation of what failed and whether it is worth fixing

Options compared plainly

A leaking tank body cannot be repaired. Everything else is a judgement call, and these are the paths.

  • Repair: a failed element, thermostat or valve is often a repair job. It costs less now and makes sense when the rest of the tank is sound.
  • Replace like for like: the same size in the same spot. It is the simplest install.
  • Change the size: a larger tank for a growing household, or a smaller one for fewer people. Pipework may change with it.
  • Another type of water heater: some homes switch. That changes the cost and the work, so we go over it with you before pricing it.
  • Wait and watch: if the tank is old but not leaking, you can sometimes plan the swap for a convenient day instead of waiting for a failure at midnight. We will tell you honestly which you are facing.

What drives the cost

Replacement starts from $1,000 and repairs start from $150. After that, the price follows the job.

  • Tank size and type
  • How easy the old tank is to reach and how the new one gets in, for example down basement stairs
  • The condition of the shut-off valves and fittings around the tank
  • Electrical or venting connections that need work
  • For a repair, which part has failed

Local conditions

Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview drink the same water. The City of Moncton treats Turtle Creek surface water, removes suspended solids, colour, bacteria, organics, iron and manganese, and adjusts it chemically to reduce corrosiveness to metal pipes (City of Moncton, Water Quality and Services). A corrosion control program has added a phosphate blend since January 30, 1998, forming a thin protective coating inside pipes (same City page). That protects pipes. Your tank's age and condition still decide what happens to it, so we look at the tank itself and not only at the water report.

Permits come from the province. NB Reg. 84-187, s. 14.01(1) and (2)(c) allow one special permit for a series of ten or more plumbing systems and list replacing service water heaters among the work it can cover (NB Reg. 84-187). Our pages for Dieppe and Riverview cover the details for each town.

Warranty and what to expect

You call, we answer and the appointment is booked. The plumber checks the tank, finds out whether the problem is a part or the tank itself, and gives you the repair or replacement price before any work starts. Before an old tank comes out, the water supply and the power or fuel to it are shut off and the tank is drained. Nothing is switched back on until the new connections are checked for leaks.

New tanks come with the maker's warranty. Ask when you book and we will tell you what applies to your job, and keep your paperwork somewhere you can find it.

Care afterwards

A tank gives warning signs before it fails. Watching for them gives you time to plan instead of mopping.

  • Know where the water shut-off to the tank is
  • Look at the base of the tank for drips every few months
  • Keep boxes and clutter clear of the tank so you can see it
  • Call if you hear popping or rumbling, or see rust-coloured hot water

Questions we get asked

How much does hot water tank replacement cost in Moncton?

Hot water tank replacement starts from $1,000 and water heater repairs start from $150. The final price depends on the tank, the access and the connections. You get the price before work starts.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

It depends on the cause. A failed element, thermostat or valve is often a repair. A leaking tank has to be replaced. We find the cause first and explain both prices.

Why do I have no hot water?

The usual suspects are a tripped breaker, a failed element or thermostat, or a tank that has failed. Check the breaker first, then see our guide on what to check first. If it still will not heat, call.

What do I do if my tank is leaking right now?

Shut off the water to the tank and, if it is electric, switch off its breaker. Then call us. We are open 24/7.

Does Moncton water shorten the life of a tank?

The water for Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview is treated and adjusted chemically to reduce corrosiveness to metal pipes, under a corrosion control program running since January 30, 1998 (City of Moncton). That is about pipes. We judge a tank by its own condition.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater?

NB Reg. 84-187, s. 13(1) says the plumbing contractor or person responsible shall obtain a plumbing permit from the chief plumbing inspector before starting installation, extension, alteration, renewal or repair of a plumbing system (NB Reg. 84-187). Call and we will go through how it applies to your job.
